So WOOHOO for the team and their supporters!

The Boston Red Sox won their second World Series in four years Sunday, edging the Colorado Rockies, 4-3, in Game 4 at Coors Field in Denver. According to the New York Times, “They are the first team to win multiple championships since 2000, and with a deep payroll and a stable of talented young pitchers, they may be poised for more.”

Top 10 Healthiest Foods

Posted in Ramblings by Rubina on the October 27th, 2007

We all want to live a long and healthy life don’t we? The easy way for that is to watch what you eat. Sure, we all enjoy (and need) junk food once in a while. But apart from that, here are the top ten foods that you should be looking for when you go grocery shopping.

1. Apples - Yes, we all know the saying “One apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Apples lower cholesterol and glucose levels, and they’re a great source of Vitamin C.

2. Almonds - You won’t believe how many nutrients there are in this nut! Calcium, fiber, vitamin E, iron, etc.

3. Broccoli - Its nutrients may help prevent diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. So cook them well and enjoy!

4. Blueberries - They look cute AND they’re healthy! Blueberries are good for improving short-term memory. Have trouble with memorization? You should consider eating this delicious fruit.

5. Red beans - Yes, they make you fart BUT it’s also a protein so eat them and cover your noses!

6. Salmon - Extremely good for the heart, low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

7. Spinach - It’s no joke that Popeye becomes stronger after he takes his spinach dose. It actually boosts your immune system and help prevent certain types of cancer.

8. Sweet Potatoes - They’re sweet. Good source for fiber and vitamin C.

9. Vegetable Juice - This sounds very disgusting but it’s a good way to include many types of veggies into your diet.

10. Wheat Germ - Why is it call a germ if it’s healthy? It’s basically the germ at the center of the wheat seed. It’s filled with nutrients, and the way to eat it is put it in your cereal, muffins and pancakes.

Hi, my name is Spot and I’m a MySpaceholic

Posted in Ramblings by Rubina on the October 25th, 2007

Are you an addict?

Drugs - no
Smoking - no
Alcohol - no
MySpace - yes

Yes, you are.

With well over 100 million users, MySpace.com accounts for 4.92% of all Internet visits! What can I say except, “Well done, Tom!”

There is, however, a battle between the two most popular social networking sites - MySpace and Facebook. The amount of Facebook users is constantly rising, aiming to reach MySpace’s high standards. Ironic, actually, to use to the terms “high standard”. Because according to TIME, “Facebook users tend to be more affluent, with its users skewing towards households earning over $60,000 per year, while MySpace users skew toward lower income levels, with 12% more of its users earning under $60,000 per year”.

Will Facebook ever surpass MySpace’s popularity? We’ll have to wait and see.

Although I must say, I don’t know how MySpace does it. We constantly get error pages while trying to access our friends’ profiles or do anything with ours, we have to type it those security numbers and letters TOO MANY times, and the homepage is just a mess!
Yet, millions of people are addicted to it, and have the PATIENCE to deal with it.

Is it just because we can edit our profiles and play with the layout? If that’s all it takes, then boy are we glad to offer a MySpace editing website!

The Domino Effect

Posted in Ramblings by Rubina on the October 23rd, 2007

A few days ago the TV Links website got shut down [read previous post for more detail]. Today, OiNK.cd, a music sharing website with over 180,000 members, was raided and the 24-year-old owner got arrested. If you go into their website now, you will notice that it says:

This site has been closed as a result of a criminal investigation by IFPI, BPI,
Cleveland Police and the Fiscal Investigation Unit of the Dutch Police (FIOD ECD) into
suspected illegal music distribution.

A criminal investigation continues into the identities and activities of the site’s
users

Now that’s scary isn’t it? If you were one of the members of OiNK, well, it’s too late to do anything about it now! It is still unknown what the penalty would be put on the users. Although losing a site like OiNK is penalty enough.

Were you a member on OiNK? What’s your take on this?

Put your hands behind your back.

On a cold, Sunday afternoon, there’s nothing better to do than to stay in bed and watch movies. So, I type in the “TV-Links” web address on my browser, and the page does not open. So I thought to myself, ‘whatever, I’ll try again later’. While reading through online news and blogs, I found something that SHOCKED me completely! TV-Links has been shut down, and the 26-year-old site owner got arrested!

Tv-Links, if you don’t know, is one of the world’s most-used pirate film websites. It was the place to see the latest episodes of most TV series and movies ranging from old to new. With that gone, a part of my life is missing.

Then, I see another unexpected news headline about the Trevi Fountain in Rome turning red! Yesterday, A 54-year-old man (now arrested) put red coloring into the water, alarming tourists around there. Every thing is back to normal now, but you can see what it looked like from the image below.

So who else got arrested? Hmm… I wouldn’t be surprised if I see something about Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan. But I’m not even gonna go into that!

Let this be a lesson to you all, don’t do anything stupid because you could easily end up behind bars.

Boo hoo… I want TV-Links back! :(

Stay Alert for Life’s Surprises!

Posted in Ramblings by Rubina on the October 19th, 2007

Many of us seem to have our lives all planned out. Where we’re going to study, what kind of wedding we’ll have, what job we’ll do and where we’ll live are all set in our minds.

But things don’t really go according to plan do they?

I went to see the movie Knocked Up today, which was basically about a 20-something girl who unexpectedly got pregnant. I realized that we all get surprises in our lives, and they all come in different forms. What counts is how we handle it. When a teenage girl (under 20) gets pregnant, it is quite difficult for people to accept it. But it also takes a lot of courage for the girl to accept that she is a mother.

I guess what I’m trying to say that nothing can go smoothly and it is inevitable that our lives will take different turns; turns that we may not be ready for. But remember that everything happens for a reason. You might not be able to see the positive side of a situation yet, but one day you will.

After all, there are two sides on a coin.

Green Apple

Posted in What's up with the world today? by Rubina on the October 17th, 2007

I’m completely alarmed by this!
Apple is going to be sued by Greenpeace! What’s the connection? Well, in short, some researchers have taken apart an iPhone and found that there are certain chemicals that can be harmful if leaked.

I can’t even begin to say how ridiculous this is. Apple was told that on the iPhone package, there should be a warning label for environmental health (as many technological gadgets do). I understand this point… But will a sticker really make a difference?

If something were to leak out, will a sticker turn into a super sticker and prevent it from happening?!

By 2008, Apple would have to reformulate the iPhones without these “potentially leaking harmful chemicals”. Apple, as cool as it is, argued that “the levels of chemicals in its products adhere to government standards.”

So Greenpeace people, go hug a tree.

What to expect when you’re in Rome for the Film Fest…

Posted in What's up with the world today?, Ramblings by Rubina on the October 14th, 2007

In just its sophomore year, Rome is ready to host another grandiose film festival.

The movies that are part of the festival are characterized in four sections:

* Première
* Cinema 2007
* Extra
* Alice in the City

According to Filmfestivals.com 167 pictures are listed for projection, 11 World Premiers, and 500,000 people are expected to attend. The fest is not only about film. There will also be concerts, exhibitions and after parties where most people will try to sweet-talk their way into.

If you are in fact one of the 500,000 expected guests, here is what you should expect in Rome from October 18th until the 27th:

1. When you are strolling along Via Condotti, Rome’s most branded street, don’t forget to take a peek in Prada, Hermès or Louis Vuitton, because you might just be lucky enough to catch the lovely Cate Blanchett buying the latest designer handbag.

2. If you’ve been waiting for 20 minutes for a bus to take you to the Auditorium - Parco della Musica (the festival’s main venue), keep waiting. Public transports usually do take that long to arrive.

3. If you’ve been waiting over 40 minutes at the bus stop, there is a high chance that Rome’s bus drivers are on strike. Call a taxi immediately! Unless, of course, taxi drivers are on strike too; in which case, just buy a map and start running.

4. If you happen to see only a few Italians in movie theaters, do not wonder. Most likely, there is a soccer match going on that simply cannot be missed.

5. If you came to Rome with an American stud, don’t be surprised if you go back with an Italian sweetheart.

6. In the ten days of the festival, do not plan to go see a movie every single day. You’re in Rome: the most beautiful city in the world! Go sit in a piazza, drink some vino, and listen to musicians play classic Italian songs. You won’t enjoy this anywhere else.

So, if you are planning on attending the Rome Cinema Fest 2007, make sure you have all of these things in mind. But most importantly, expect the unexpected.

Rome is full of surprises.

Honey, what is WWW?

Posted in Ramblings by Rubina on the October 10th, 2007

I was on the train this morning, reading through my Psychology notes on the difference between neurosis and psychosis, but I just couldn’t limit my concentration to that. There was an old (let’s say around 50-60) couple in front of me talking about how the Internet is such an extraordinary place. They were actually amazed at how Italian local newspapers can now be read online.

Now, the young generation of this time know that the Internet is much more than that. With the Internet, you are connected with the whole world. I was thinking, if the couple on the train were amazed just by knowing that news can be read online, what would their reactions be if they found out about the full capabilities of the World Wide Web?

I am certain that in about 30 years from now, the next young generation will hear our conversations about the Internet and think, “Geez, these people know nothing!”

The Internet is like a powerful drug that is getting everyone addicted… Including YOU!

What are you still doing online? Actually, why are you still reading this blog?! Don’t you have to study? Play with your kids? or Make love to your wife?

I have something better to do… I’m going to sleep :)

Buona Notte from Italy!
